Last night I went to the Fillmore in SF and saw Walk The Moon and Young The Giant. It was such an amazing experience. I have seen both bands before, so it wasn’t seeing anew band that made it so unique.
The first time I saw Young The Giant the band had a different name, The Jakes, and they had six members, now they have five. It was at Bamboozle Left, they were the only band my friend Sarah HAD to see. They were playing this stage that opened up into a field. The crowd started out semi-small, but as the band played the crowed grew a bit. By the end of the show there were probably around 25 people and everyone was really into it.
Later that week Sarah and I saw them at at least 2-3 shows around LA county. Overtime we would go pretty much anywhere from Orange county to Santa Barbra county. We saw them at a tiny art gallery without a stage where we were 2 feet away from them; we saw them at a small venue in SB next to a music store with about 10 other people (4 of which were friends of the bands); we saw them at The Roxy and other prestigious venues in LA. They lost a member, then they changed their name. And then they thanks to Julie they got to play at the coffee shop at LMU. They got signed to a label; they had a residency at the Troubadour; they had a residency at the Casbah in SD; they released an album.
More recently they started getting radio play. And they started to play larger venues. Last night, by the time they started the venue was packed. They sold out 2 nights at The Fillmore (along with multiple other shows on their headlining tour, where in many cities they added a second night which also sold out). One of the first songs they played was “Apartment” and it gave me chills to hear the crowd sing along. As the set continued and they played new songs and others off their first full-length album (they didn’t play any that were on their EP from The Jakes days, much to my disappointment even though I didn’t really expect it) I became extremely sentimental. I started to have flash backs of every show I had seen them at before. It is amazing to see how much they have grown, not just their fan base, but also their music. They ended their encore with “My Body” and I got chills as the ENTIRE venue, from the stage to the farthest spot in the back to the balcony, all sang and clapped along.
It is crazy that in the 4 years I have been listening to them they have gone from that band that had people who didn’t know their music spread out in a field listening to them to this:
